It’s Friday evening in Stockholm, corner of Kvarngatan and Sankt Paulsgatan. This is where you find

I still haven’t figured out what those birds were, hundreds of birds that occupied a green at Djurgardsvagen in Stockholm in search of yummy worms. Geese maybe? Kubb game far afield. All in all, everyone was busy with its own stuff that evening.

In a few minutes time curiosity has finally prevailed over hunger as I saw a few birds approaching me. This is how the record was made – an intriguing quack reminding of those sounds made by teddy bears when turned over, hiss and puff, kubb to the right, traffic to the left.

Oh yes I’m well aware of the fact that it’s better to think twice before uttering the word like ‘Abba’ following the word like ‘Sweden’ – too obvious. But here’s the different story: Sweden, Abba and… OAP disco.

Seen through an open window on the midnight alley running along Karlavagen in Stockholm were the grey-headed men and women dancing and making gestures with their fingers coupled overhead, but no less fascinating was their sing-along. Just think of the frantic ‘rock’n'roll’ shout in the end!

So, let’s have try. Each evening, starting today, I will be posting an audio recording – one of those I have made in Stockholm last week. I’m not sure if this will last that long, and this will definitely have its end one day, sooner or later but let’s listen to those days just as long as we need them.

First, Zinkensdamms IP, a sports ground in Sodermalm on the night of the game. Don’t forget to put your headphones on.

One last thing. You can tell those sounds by generally meaningless patterns used as a token signs. Get back tomorrow and let me know what you think. Many thanks to Magnus Natt Och Dag and Elin Franzèn without whose support this series would never sound the same (hardly better).

For some reason, I like amateur brass bands so much. The performance may be far from perfect, the sound is not that polished and the repertoire may lack those virtuoso pieces but one thing is for sure, they do play an important role in bringing community spirit even to the most deprived areas. This is the local brass band playing at the opening of the annual town celebration in Krasnozavodsk, a small town not far from Sergiyev Posad. It wasn’t their best day of course but anyway…
